Bahraini Authorities Impose Travel Ban on Nabeel Rajab…FIDH Criticizes Decision

2015-09-09 - 9:33 p

Bahrain Mirror (Exclusive): The Observatory for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders, a joint programme of the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH), said on Tuesday (September 8, 2015) that the Bahraini authorities imposed a travel ban on the president of the Bahrain Center for Human Rights (BCHR), Nabeel Rajab.

The Observatory stated, according to the information it received, that the Public Prosecution imposed the ban on Rajab (July 13, 2015) as he faces two criminal charges for posting tweets. The first charge is "insulting a statutory body" referring to the torture practiced by the Ministry of Interior. The second charge is in relation to tweets criticizing war on Yemen.

"Mr. Nabeel Rajab's lawyers intend to file a grievance to the Public Prosecution to challenge the travel ban," it further stated.

The Observatory denounced the new travel ban imposed on Rajab and considers that the timing of the new ban clearly indicates that he is targeted solely for his human rights activities. The Observatory also calls on the Bahraini authorities to immediately lift the travel ban, and drop all charges against Rajab.
