Bahrain's SIU: 35 Prison Torture Complaints in February & 5 Policemen Referred to Trial

Bahrain Mirror: Mohammad Khaled Al-Hazaa, member of Bahrain's Special Investigation Unit (SIU), announced that the unit received during February, 2016, 35 complaints, 4 of which the unit has already began investigating. The allegations varied between torture and maltreatment.

"Within the framework of the unit during the same month, the unit listened to the statements of 44 witnesses and interrogated 16 suspects from public security forces. The unit also referred two of the complainants to the special forensic doctor to determine injuries, as well as the cause and date of occurrence," the unit highlighted.

Al-Hazaa further stated that "the Special Investigation Unit finished its investigations in one of the cases in which a citizen claimed he was beaten by the police during the first half of 2015. The unit referred 5 suspects from the public security forces members to the ninth minor criminal court over charges of violating the bodily integrity of others and demanded punishing them pursuant to articles 4/75, 1/107, 1/339 and 2/399 of the penal code. March 20, 2016 was set as a date for looking into the case."
