Four Women Elected in New GFBTU Secretariat

Bahrain Mirror: The election results of the new General Federation of Bahrain Trade Unions (GFBTU) secretariat showed that four women were among the winners, including a fresh face, Zainab Abu Deeb from ASRY trade union, as well as three others, Soad Mubarak, Najat Abdul Hussain, and Khatoon Al-Aradi.

Hassan Al-Halwachi from BNAGAZ trade union won the majority of the votes, followed by Jaafar Khalil from GARMCO trade union in the the GFBTU elections that took place at Monday night (March 7, 2016), concluding the general conference attended by 135 delegates.

International unionists considered that the GFBTU's election represented an example of rare democracy and hope for the people in the region.

AbdulQader Al-Shehabi, AbdulKarim Radhi, Mohammed Mosaed, Salman Al-Saad, Ali Gannam, Hussain Al-Asfoor, Abdul Wahed Al-Najjar, Joma'a Al-Bin Khalil, and Yousif Ahmed Hassan won the remaining seats.

The new secretariat will lead the trade union in Bahrain for the four coming years.

The general conference issued a closing statement listing 14 points, the most important of which was its call for all parties to commit to implementing the tripartite agreement signed on March 10, 2014, by reinstating the rest of the dismissed and implementing the remaining terms of the agreement. The conference also expressed its unlimited solidarity with with the dismissed unionists in particular and all the other dismissed workers in general.

The conference further issued a statement mourning the late unionist Abdul Ameer Al-Shakhouri who passed away on Sunday evening.
