A Bahraini court sentenced on Tuesday (May 24, 2016) Shiite cleric Sheikh Mohammad Al-Mansi, who was arrested last month over charges of leading prayers without a license, to one year in prison.

Sheikh Al-Mansi is well-known for his efforts, following up the cases of about 40 mosques demolished by the authorities as part of a retaliatory campaign launched against Bahrainis calling for democracy.

The Al-Wefaq National Islamic Society stressed that Al-Mansi "is one of the prominent clerics in Bahrain," considering his arrest to be "a provoking and unacceptable action that reveals the systematic targeting of Shiite clerics."
