Fishermen Protest against Ban on Shrimp Fishing

2017-07-10 - 1:15 am

Bahrain Mirror: A number of seafarers and professional fishermen demonstrated outside the Agriculture and Marine Resources Agency of the Ministry of Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning in Budaiya, demanding that it provides an appropriate alternative for them after the decision was issued banning shrimp fishing for 6 months.

A local newspaper reported that one of the sailors said that they had been unemployed during this entire period, and that their livelihood and the livelihoods of their families had been affected, as they are unable to pay their debts to banks and shops, as well as monthly labor market fees and workers' salaries. He further stated that this situation has made them suffer heavy losses.

The fishermen pointed out that the Cabinet's statement assured that alternatives would be provided for the fishermen so that this sector would not be adversely affected, noting that the concerned authorities did not inform them of these alternatives so far.

In the same context, the Bahraini Fishermen Society Secretary Abdel-Amir Al-Mughni said in an earlier statement that more than 400 motorboats violate the ban on shrimp fishing, which makes the ban useless with the lack of effective implementation.
