MoI Announces "Reviewing Visitation System", Ignores Demands of Detainees on Hunger Strike

Bahrain Mirror: Interior Minister Rashid bin Abdullah Al Khalifa said on Monday that "the current visitation system and its development to increase the allotted durations as well as considerations for amending conditions related to the visitors' list were reviewed," but without mentioning the removal of the glass barrier, which is one of the demands of political prisoners on hunger strike.

The minister spoke during his meeting with the President of the National Institution for Human Rights, the Chairperson of the Prisoners and Detainees Rights Commission, and the Secretary-General of the Ombudsman about "reviewing the current visitation system and its development to increase the allotted durations as well as considerations for amending conditions related to the visitors' list, in addition to increasing the allotted daily outdoor time."

He also tackled the issue of coordinating with telecommunications company to review the calls tariffs of prisoners, and facilitating the completion of the detainees' studies at all levels. He added that, in cooperation with the Higher Education Council, 180 inmates have been enrolled in different higher studies programs in different specializations this year. The meeting also discussed continuing developing the health services provided to inmates by the Government Hospitals.
