Bahrain Mirror: Zeinab Al-Khamis, head of the monitoring and follow-up committee at the Bahrain Human Rights Society, said that political prisoners in Building No. 9 in Jaw Central Prison, who wish to pursue their studies, were shocked when they were told that the private universities which opened for enrollment require exorbitant fees.

Al-Khamis quoted a prisoner, in a tweet on "X" platform, as saying that the fees of studying in universities and the specializations offered by the prison administration are as follows: 

• Gulf University (Human Resources) 10,000 BD
• Open Arab University (Business Administration and Accounting, English Literature) 5,000 BD
• Applied Science University (Business Administration and Accounting) 10,000 BD
• Ahlia University (Translation and English Literature) 8,000 BD

She pointed out that "the opening of university registration in Jaw Prison is a step in the right direction to raise the human rights level, which will be reflected on the situation of political and criminal prisoners who are serving long sentences," adding that "this will allow them to benefit academically while serving their prison term."

Zeinab Al-Khamis regretted that "the National University of Bahrain did not offer its academic programs in prison, while only commercial private universities are allowed to offer their programs without taking into consideration the desire of the prisoner himself, in addition to the high costs."
