Bahrain Mirror: Americans for Democracy and Human Rights in Bahrain condemned the Jaw Central Prison administration's punishment of political detainees who were assaulted instead of launching an investigation to hold the perpetrators accountable.

The organization expressed, in a statement today, Wednesday, January 10, 2024, its concern that 400 political detainees from Buildings 7, 8, 9, and 10 in the prison announced an open hunger strike in protest against the decision to isolate the victims of the incident of assault on January 5, 2024, and to demand that Mr. Hasan Mushaima, be given immediate treatment, in addition to meeting the demands of the previous strike that were not met.

The organization denounced "the prison administration's imposition of solitary confinement against Ahmed Shaker and Ibrahim Al-Samahiji and preventing them from communicating with their families, as no news were reported about them and their families are extremely worried about them."

It considered that "the absence of investigation and accountability for the assault incident by the prison administration and its protection of the attackers is a continuation of the policy of impunity prevailing in Bahraini prisons."

The organization called on the Ministry of Interior to "end this, reveal the fate of the victims, and respond to the demands of the detainees on hunger strike."

The two detainees, Al-Samahiji and Shaker, were assaulted by criminal prisoners on Friday, January 5, 2024, in building 2, ward 4, which required Shaker to be transferred to the hospital due to a severe eye injury. The prison administration did not inform his family, and when his mother called to check on him, it claimed that "he was fine and would call," but this did not happen.
