SIU Interrogates 55 Police Officers on Torture Charges, Refers 4 to Trial

Bahrain Mirror: Deputy Chief of the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) Mohammad Khalid al-Hazza, said that since the beginning of the year, the unit received 53 complaints that varied from torture, ill-treatment and use of excessive force by members of the public security forces. He claimed that the SIU launched its investigations into all those complaints.

Al-Hazza said he "listened to 64 complainers and 56 witnesses, while 55 suspects of the security forces were interrogated. 144 complainers were referred to the SIU medical examiners for checkup, 2 complainers were referred to the SIU psychiatrist for checkup to see if they suffer any psychological effects."

Moreover, Deputy Chief of the SIU noted that the unit continued its investigations into 3 different cases, and has referred 4 security forces members to the competent criminal court. It requested their punishment on charges of assaulting the safety of another party. Also, 2 other members of the security forces were referred to the military court in two separate cases, over violations they committed.
