Germany Calls on Bahrain to Protect Human Rights and Basic Freedoms

Bahrain Mirror: Bärbel Kofler, German Federal Government Commissioner for Human Rights Policy and Humanitarian Aid at the Federal Foreign Office, issued a statement deploring the conviction of Bahraini human rights activist Nabeel Rajab.

In a statement published by the Federal Foreign Office, Kofler expressed her disappointment to learn that Bahraini human right activist Nabeel Rajab was sentenced to two years in prison for giving interviews to foreign media, stressing that Freedom of expression and freedom of the press, along with freedom of assembly and freedom to demonstrate, are essential prerequisites for a functioning constitutional democracy.

"I deplore this sentence against Nabeel Rajab and call on the Government of the Kingdom of Bahrain to meet its international obligations to protect human rights and fundamental freedoms," she further stated.
