Bahrain Mirror: Activists and human rights defenders confirmed that political prisoners at Jaw Central Prison began their open hunger strike today on Saturday (September 9, 2017), which is to continue until their demands are met.

A number of rights activists confirmed that the detainees at Jaw prison returned their breakfast meals that they refused to eat this morning.

The political prisoners demand that "the prison be suited for human life" and call for receiving "their full rights to move freely and enjoy freedom of worship."

Since the onset of the year, detainees have complained about widespread violations practiced against them and even denial of their right to pray and go outside to the prison yards.

Bahrain is one of the top countries globally in political prisoners per capita with a population of at least 3,000 imprisoned for political reasons, according to local human rights groups.
