Bahrain Mirror: The High Appeals Court upheld death sentences against Hussein Mahdi and Sayed Ahmad Al-Abbar, who are accused of killing policeman Mohammad Nafid through Karbabad blast.

The court also upheld life sentences issued against 3 convicts in the same incident, and jail terms ranging between 3 and 10 years against 8 others and citizen revocation of 9. The court bound the first seven suspects to pay together 25 thousand and 416 BD for the damages caused to the police patrol,  3 thousand BD for the damages caused to the truck and ordered the confiscation of seized items.

Human rights organizations challenge the charges raised against political detainees, since they doubt the independence of the judiciary, whose members are assigned by royal decrees, and since it issues sentences based on confessions extracted under duress and evidence presented by secret investigations and anonymous witnesses.
