Bahraini Court Sets BD300 Bail to Stop Execution of Former MP who Insulted Imam Mahdi

Bahrain Mirror: A Bahraini court sentenced former MP Mohammed Khalid on Wednesday (April 18, 2018) to 3 months in prison and ordered a BD300 bail to stop execution of sentence after convicting him of insulting figures of a sect.

Khalid had posted on Twitter tweets deemed insulting to Imam Mahdi, the twelfth Imam of Shia who represent the majority of indigenous.

Acting Chief Prosecutor in the Northern Governorate Abdulrahman Al-Maouda said that the third minor criminal court issued 3-month jail term and BD300 bail to the stop the execution of the sentence issued against a tweeter.

He added that several citizens had lodged complaints with the Public Prosecution against the twitter user. The Public Prosecution investigated the case, heard the plaintiffs' testimonies and confronted the defendant with the compelling defamatory tweet from his account. The Public Prosecution had charged the defendant with defaming a religious symbol revered by a sect, under article 2/310 of the penal code and referred him to the Lower Criminal Court which convicted him.
