Bahrain Mirror: The head of the Monitoring and Follow-up Committee at the Bahraini Human Rights Society, Zainab Al-Khamis, called on the Bahraini authorities to allow political prisoner Ali Taher Al-Shamimi to participate in the funeral ceremony for his mother, who has recently died.

Al-Khamis confirmed, in a post on the "X" platform today, Saturday, January 13, 2024, that the authorities deprived detainee Al-Shamimi of taking one last look at his mother before her burial, reminding the authorities that "local law in Bahrain allows, after the approval of the Public Prosecution," to temporary release the prisoner to participate with his family in the burial procession and to have a last look at the deceased if he was of the first degree."

She recalled that "allowing prisoners to participate in the burial procession of their relatives is one of their rights in accordance with local and international law," calling on the prison administration to "clarify the standards of good conduct that prevent prisoners from participating in the burial ceremonies of their relatives."

It is worth noting that Al-Shamimi is from the town of Al-Awamiya in the Qatif Governorate of Saudi Arabia. A Bahraini court sentenced him to 10 years in prison on December 30, 2013 on political grounds, and he was tried when he was 17 years old.
